General Information About Da Lat City

Dalat looks like a cross between Vietnam and the French Alps. Many of its hotels and houses were built in a French style during the French colonization. There are many places for tourists interested in architecture to visit, such as Dalat Railway Station, designed by French architects Moncet and Reveron, or Hang Nga guest house, a.k.a ‘Crazy house’ which is also an interesting place to stay.

The climate in Dalat is often called ‘Eternal Spring’ for its pleasantly warm temperatures during the day and quite cool at night, down to perhaps 10oC. Due to its favorable weather, Dalat is a supplier of temperate produce for all over Vietnam, for example, cabbage and cauliflower. Also, it has a nickname ‘City of Flowers’. Its flower industry is highly developed and famous for two typical flowers: hydrangea and golden everlasting.

Apart from architectural places of interest, Dalat also has lots of beautiful sites such as Xuan Huong Lake - center of town, Lake of Sorrow (Lake of Sighs) - 5km Northeast of town on Ho Xuan Huong Road, Valley of Love - Phu Dong Thien Vuong Street, Lang Biang Mountain - has a 1900m peak, ideal for a 3-hour hike, Prenn Falls - 10km outside the town, Pongour Falls - one of the largest and widest waterfalls in Vietnam, 30km south of town on highway 20, etc.

Tourists arriving in Dalat can enjoy the atmosphere of Vietnamese markets by visiting Dalat market, which is full of local specialties such as strawberry jam, dried fruits, avocado, artichoke.?

Da Lat history

The History of Da Lat

Da Lat is located in the central highland of Vietnam at Lam Dong province, and about 200km far from the northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. It was founded in 1897 when Doctor Alexandre Yersin recommended that this area could be developed as a resort town.

Then French started to invest in the town as the playground with a lot of hotels and villas in the clear mountain air to escape from the heat and humidity of the coast and Saigon at that time.Da Lat became different from anywhere else in Vietnam, and it looks like a cross between Vietnam and France. There are many buildings built base on the French architecture such as Da Lat train station, the Crazy House, Hang Nga guest house, the three palaces and summer home of the last emperor of Vietnam Bao Dai,...

The city spreads across a series of pine-covered hills, with a small lake in the center and surrounded by a lake and higher peaks, making for some lovely scenery. All the lakes in Da Lat become famous because of its romantic name and charming sightseeing as Ho Xuan Huong, Than Tho, Da Thien, and Tuyen Lam. In addition, the city is surrounded with LangBian highland, one of the attractive spot at Da Lat with the height 1900m, also the living area of some ethnic minority villages.

Thanks to its pleasant weather, Da Lat is also called “Eternal Spring” city, warm during the day and pretty cool at night. Sometimes, it could be down to 10 degree. That weather is quite good condition to grow plenty kinds of plant, so Da Lat is the supplier of vegetable and fruit all over Vietnam. Moreover, the city also has another name of “City of flowers” with 2 famous typical flowers: hydrangea and golden everlasting. The flowers growing industry is highly developed so the city organizes the Flowers festival every year to attract more tourists.

Nowaday Da Lat is one of the most attractive destinations in Vietnam. About 800,000 domestic tourists and 80,000 foreign tourists visit every year, and it becomes the country’s favorite honeymoon spot thanks to its romantic scenery.

Da Lat nightlife

Ho Chi Minh City Nightlife

Dalat is famous for its rich colonial atmosphere as well as for having many great natural sites. It might, however, be lacking slightly in its nightlife but if visitors really want to enjoy themselves they can definitely find quite a few interesting establishments at the more up-market venues. Among them are Larry's Bar and Le Rabelais Bar, both are located in the Dalat Palace Hotel.

For a choice of drinks here, there are imported beers, whiskies, cocktails and wine. Many new arrivals in Vietnam are surprised to discover locally produced wine. Thanks to the French, who introduced this beverage to the country, there is a young but growing wine industry in and around Dalat with Vang Dalat (aka Wine Dalat) and Dalat Beco the two main producers. Customers can find interesting local-made drinks on Dalat’s restaurant menus including Bordeaux-style wines, sparkling white wines, peach coolers and wine coolers. Give them a try!
